PhD Thesis

My PhD thesis is about the attenuation of morphological aspects induced by the physical chemistry of complex fluids. I defended in July 2013.

First, I studied the effects of rheological properties on the instability of polymer and micellar solutions flowing down a vertical fiber. I show experimentally that these rheological properties modify the growth of the instability and the resulting patterns. In particular, I employed giant micelles for which elastic properties attenuate surface tension effects and suppress the instability.

Second, we characterized a consolidating complex system in which different mechanical instabilities emerge: creases and cracks. Before crack propagation, surface structures similar to creases were observed and characterized by rheological, optical and surface measurements. Then, we studied crack morphologies and more precisely how the crack spacing is modified by mechanical properties (indentation testing).  Finally, we observed the liquid-solid transition at the particle length-scale in nanoparticle colloidal systems with small angle X-ray and neutron scattering. We found that there is a structural anisotropy in the gel, preceding the solidification front.
